What makes Forge of Empires stand out is that it incorporates a concept of continuity and evolution in its gameplay. All in all, Forge of Empires is good, with solid game mechanics, and progressing through time makes for more engaging gameplay. PvP battles are there to provide a bit of challenge and change of pace. You're going to invest a fair bit of time to make progress, though, but it would be worth it.
